It feels like the warm weather has barely gotten started, yet summer vacation is already half over! It’s almost time to stock up on school supplies, shop for new dorm room necessities and add to your closet with back to school fashions. Let us help you go back to school in style this year with our newest contest! One lucky winner will receive a back to school essentials kit consisting of two pairs of shoes and a bag or backpack from ShoeMall.com – winner’s choice!*
We will be putting up a new blog post every Wednesday morning at TheShoeDiaries.com for the next few weeks. The blog post will contain a question about back to school fashion or fall fun. Simply leave a comment on that blog post answering that week’s question for an entry in the contest. You can only earn one (1) entry per blog post, but we will be putting up four different posts so check back for more entries! Be sure to include a valid email address when prompted as you submit your comment. This will not be published, but will be used to contact you if you win!
We loved reading your comments on last week’s question about where fall fashion is going this year. It looks like the general consensus so far is that boots of all types, shooties, sneakers and platforms will be in style this season. Answer the question below to gain another entry in our contest. If you missed last week’s question, don’t worry! You can still gain an entry by leaving your comment on that post as well.
This week’s question is:
No matter how stylish we are, no one’s perfect! What’s the most embarrassing, wacky or flat-out hilarious back to school fashion trend you’ve followed?
Want to earn additional entries in the contest or take a closer look at the rules? Visit ShoeMall’s Back to School in Style Giveaway page at ShoeMall.com!
Please email win@shoemall.com with any additional questions. The contest ends at 11:59 PM CST on Saturday, August 14th, 2010.
*You don’t have to be headed back to school to be eligible to win – everyone deserves a fall fashion shopping spree!

Example: My favorite outfit in 1st grade was a pair of bright pink spandex bike shorts and a tie-dyed shirt. And yes – the shirt was knotted on the side! Still love tie-dye shirts for lazy days, but I avoid the spandex shorts now!
Different patterns put together that had no business being together. It looked awful.
A plaid flannel shirt that I wore almost every week in high school. Shiver.
I actually wore knee high Roman sandals at one point. And yes, I know that has been back in style recently. That really dates you when fashion trends like that come back twice in a lifetime.
Plaid jacket, plaid scarf, too much plaid!
American flag bell bottoms!!! Wow!!!
Hmmm I would have to say it would be a terry cloth poncho my Aunt made- I wore it constantly in 3rd grade. My school pictures.. well I am in that poncho and it had a million colors in it plus tassles!
tight rolling my jeans was the worst. Or hairspraying my hair straight up. Pretty much anything in the early 90′s late 80′s
polka dot clothes with rainbow colour designs..many noticed it but not in a good way…

I havent been entering it here every time- I think I had 50 last week or more. Do we need to put our tweets here?
The most embarrassing trend I followed was leg warmers!
During my tween years , I wore black shorts with bright blue nylon tights underneath. I guess I failed trying to introduce a back to school fashion trend with that clownish outfit.
the flip flops in the late 80′s that had neon pink laces that you wound half way up your calf. Horrible.
Had to be the hair, in high school my bangs went way up high, using lots of hair spray and something flat to hold against them.
When I was in 6th grade or so (a LONG time ago), I wore a skirt and bluse that had the same colors – light blue and light green. Only trouble was that the blouse was a floral print, and the skirt a herringbone tweed. Someone pointed it out to me. LOL!
[...] From last week’s comments, it’s easy to see that we all get sucked into fashions that don’t look quite as good as we originally thought they would! I know I’m glad to find out I’m not the only one with skeletons in my style closet! If you missed the last couple of question, don’t worry! You can still gain an entry by leaving your comment on those posts as well. [...]

When the Merry-GO-Round company was in back in the day, I would wear the IOU loud and bright colors thats wasn’t bad but I also had Jeams with Zippers on the ankle that I would tight roll and I tight rolled all the Z-Cavaricchi pants I owned. Oh and dont forget the Zumbas.
Ah, when I was in high school, the “prairie” look was in. Ugh.
tight rolling baggy jeans – what were we thinking?!
Too much hairspray and a perm
ugh – platform shoes! They weren’t comfortable, but they were ‘in!’
do you remember leg warmers or poofy hair- or hammertime pants-
school requires uniforms so my attempts are limited at fashion
I wore an orange circular tablecloth as a poncho in high school- it was cotton, and the 60s, and I liked the fringe. And platform sandals in junior college. They *clopped* when I walked.
I owned a cream dress with sweeping drapes from shoulder-to-heavily padded shoulder. Back then, I thought it was fantastic. I now realize that I looked like a mummy whose gauze had come loose!
Parachute pants…how embarassing
I would say the faded demin look..
Grade school: horizontal striped orange dress with gold belt/coin hanging off it worn with white gogo boots.
Wearing my socks to my knees. Why was this trendy and why did I do it?
rolling up my pants cuffs!
Would have to be the “hammer” pants. LOL
I used to do rainbow-colored leg warmers! Oh yeah!
Knee socks and loafers. In my defense, everyone else did it too.
same here …Parachute pants
Hair crimping! I have some awful pictures of my hair like this and they are scary. I can’t believe we ever thought this was cool. lol thank you!
High waist jeans, what a nightmare.

In my senior year,I let my hair grow long – Wait! – That’s wasn’t so foolish. It was 1970.And come to think of it,I’ve had long hair ever since. And even though it’s not as full and thick as it used to be,it kind of fits with the long grey beard that goes with it.
The most embarrassing, wacky or flat-out hilarious back to school fashion trend I’ve followed was the time I wore the Madonna bracelets, lots of the black, plastic bracelets on each arm.

Bubble skirts! Remember those – same time period as the parachute pants!
Corduroy jeans that made that awful sound when your thighs rubbed together! I can still hear them in my mind!

One of the popular girls wore a cute skirt over skinny jeans. Trying to follow the trend, I wore this short bushy fluffy skirt over bell bottoms. Not only did it look terrible, but everyone knew I was trying to be a copy cat! Never again! Find what style you like then make it your own and be your own person.
I’m seriously loving all the back to school fashion faux pas!! Some styles have come full circle I think! Leg warmers and short bubble skirts/dresses definitely made a play for trends again within the past year or so. Keep the comments coming! : )
Lace fingerless gloves…. very 80′s Madonna. I’m embarrassed! Thanks.
Multicolor toe socks with sandals! What a mess.
Overalls. ugghhh so tacky! @sethandshannon1
I had serious 80′s hair in college (I mean, SERIOUS – my hair is waist-length so you can imagine. LOL)
Yikes, it was plaid and pegged in high school. I had plaid pants and shorts in a rainbow of colors. Ugg! Thinking about it is a bit painful but funny! And all of the pants had to be pegged! All of the time I wasted, pegging my pants. Not to mention the fortune I spent on hair spray during those big hair days. Ahhh, the good ole’ days.
I had the huge 80s hair with turned up collars and glitzy pins at the top button.
the maxi coat! I lived in the northern part of the states, and I had to have a maxi coat, well we get so much snow that I could barely walk through it with my coat dragging in the deep snow, 9th grade, thanks mom for not telling me so!
Brillo pad perm. Need I say more?
One year the stores were full of patterned sweaters during back-to-school shopping so my mom bought a few for me. The problem was I insisted wearing one the first day of school which unfortunately was 90+ degrees – I still remember the sweat rolling down my forehead
Our winner is Tammie C. from Roanoke, VA. Thanks for all of your thoughtful, fun-to-read entries! Keep your eyes peeled for additional contests to come.
